This is one of the most typical native red varieties in the Ribeiro and the second in terms of production. It is characterised by its great aromatic potential and is not normally used as a monovarietal, but it is very common as a complementary variety, adding complexity and aromatic intensity to wines.
It is a horizontally growing, productive variety, resilient to drought and well-adapted to low fertile land, although it needs a great deal of potassium. Shoots appear early and ripening is medium-late, resulting in a fairly long cycle. It tolerates hard pruning and needs good sunlight although not directly onto the stem, as it is susceptible to over-exposure to the sun. It is fairly susceptible to oidium, botrytis (grey mould) and excoriosis. |
